Why I Finally Got My Eyes Checked (and You Should Too)

Hi everyone!

Last Friday, I finally made it to the optometrist for an eye exam. It had been at least two years since my last checkup, and I’d been dealing with frequent headaches. My fiancé needed to get his eyes checked too—he wears contacts regularly and had run out—so I decided to tag along. Turns out, I’m far-sighted, which means I have trouble seeing things up close. I always thought it meant the opposite! The good news? I don’t need to wear contacts every day—thank goodness, because I can’t imagine putting those things in my eyes daily! The best part is that I now know what’s causing my headaches. I spend a lot of time at the computer—writing, doing schoolwork, and researching—so I’ll need to wear my glasses for reading, computer work, and long drives.

Please don’t neglect your eyes—schedule a checkup if you haven’t recently. Eye exams aren’t scary; they’re actually quite fascinating. An eye doctor once saved my Momma-Kons life, or at least helped extend it. She was experiencing episodes of flashing lights and thought they might be ocular migraines. But her eye doctor, knowing her history of cancer, urged her to see her primary care physician. She did, and after some tests, they discovered cancer in her brain. Thanks to quick action, she fought it successfully. This was largely because her eye doctor didn’t just assume it was migraines and instead recommended further investigation.

While eye doctors focus on your vision, they can also spot potential health issues and point you toward the right care. Plus, trying on all those different frames is genuinely fun—you get to see what suits you best and have a good laugh at the ones that look ridiculous.

Regular eye exams are about more than just updating your prescription—they can reveal underlying health conditions and give you peace of mind. If it’s been a while since your last visit, consider booking an appointment soon. Your eyes (and your overall health) will thank you.
