I absolutely love decorating. There’s something so satisfying about shaping a space that feels cozy, practical, and beautiful for my family. I’m the kind of person who easily tires of the same setup and feels the urge to refresh things. Another favorite pastime of mine is cleaning all day, then unwinding in the evening with candles, a glass of wine, and that lovely sense of accomplishment. I’ve realized that even small changes—like adding a plant or rearranging a few items—can make me fall in love with our home again. One of my favorite spots is our balcony. It’s quite compact, so making the most of every inch is key. Don’t let a small area discourage you—you can absolutely turn it into a delightful, cozy retreat you’ll adore.
We live in an apartment, and our deck measures roughly 6 by 12 feet (about 72 square feet). We wanted to add privacy without making the space feel cramped. I found some bamboo reed fencing at Home Depot that worked perfectly. We chose the thinner reeds to keep airflow and light flowing through. My fiancé, Chris, used a staple gun to attach it to the existing wooden railing. It has held up wonderfully against wind and the occasional rough weather. Our new neighbor liked it so much that they did the same to their balcony!
One day while driving, I spotted a wicker bench someone was discarding. It wasn’t in the best condition, but I knew a little care could make it perfect. I brought it home, hosed it down to remove dirt and loose paint, then spray-painted it black using a 2-in-1 satin black spray paint that includes primer. That saved me time, and the satin finish adds a subtle sheen without being overly glossy. The bench turned out fantastic!
To complete the bench and add coziness, I needed throw pillows and a seat cushion. We already had one black throw pillow, so I picked up two more black throw pillows from Ikea. The exact black version wasn’t available online, but the linked one looks just like it—only in black.
Finding the right seat cushion proved trickier. I was patient and refused to settle for something that wouldn’t suit the bench. Eventually, I found one online that I absolutely love—the Pillow Perfect Indoor/Outdoor Red Solid Wicker Loveseat Cushion
from Amazon. That completed our bench!
Chris spends a lot of time on the balcony—it’s one of his favorite spots to work. I wanted to make sure it was functional for him, so my next mission was to find a table and chairs. It needed to be large enough for his laptop and coffee, yet compact enough to fit without feeling cramped. I found a great patio bistro table at Home Depot. To keep costs down (outdoor furniture can be pricey), I bought just the table and planned to source chairs separately. I worried the size might be too small, but other options were either too big or too small. When it arrived, it was perfect—great size, quality, and style!
Next, I needed two chairs that would complement the table and the overall decor. At Target, I found these affordable and cute black folding chairs. They’re surprisingly sturdy and well-made, especially for the price. They match the balcony perfectly.
For extra style and comfort, I picked up some plush red seat cushions from Ikea. They were reasonably priced and come with Velcro straps to stay put.
Last but not least, the finishing touches! I found this charming outdoor runner at Ikea.
I also discovered these wonderful small black lanterns at Ikea.
To add a funky touch, I bought these stylish vases and these intriguing dry wood bouquets for extra texture.
I also incorporated other unused items from around the house, gradually adding them to the space. Spray painting became my go-to method for refinishing pieces on a budget. It even gave me a new appreciation for items I previously didn’t care for—it’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do. I also placed a few plants around the balcony; I love how they bring life and freshness to any area.
This project wasn’t completed in a single day—it stretched over a few months during the colder season, so we could fully enjoy it when warm, sunny days arrived. I took my time, got creative, and explored many options. Remember, a small space or a tight budget doesn’t mean you can’t create a stylish, cozy, magical spot to relax in. Don’t get discouraged—it’s absolutely possible!
